Composed in the summer of 2015, this piece was commissioned by and dedicated to Dr. Christopher Barrick, chair of the music department and professor of saxophone at the University of Arkansas – Fort Smith. Movement I tempo allegro begins with a “bop” jazz figure, and then a tutti homophonic section that introduces several seemingly improvisational style sections. In the middle of the piece, there is a short fugato section between the soloist, the low winds and double bass. The first movement ends with a cadenza and then a return to the short counterpoint section at the beginning of the piece. Movement II tempo adagio is a German style romanze, and Movement III tempo Vivace includes asymmetrical meter, modern and blues harmonies and lively syncopated motives.
A version for Alto Saxophone and Wind Ensemble is also available.
