Capriccio and Intermezzo for Piano and Wind Ensemble was first composed during the summer and fall of 1999. Originally composed for piano and orchestra, the piece premiered in the spring of 2000 in the Breedlove Auditorium on the UA Fort Smith campus with Dr. Rosilee Walker as the soloist accompanied by the Fort Smith Symphony Orchestra. The piano and wind ensemble version was completed in the summer of 2005 and can best be described as an effort to capture the delightful and humorous characters of the famed Charlie Brown comic strip. The syncopated figures and jazz rhythms evoke a kind of easy-going and fun-loving atmosphere. The middle section, the “intermezzo”, allows the listener to enjoy a moment of reflection, and later, romance. The final section is a return to the “capriccio” in the piano style known as “boogey-woogie”, and concludes with a flamboyant flair.
