Undaunted Courage begins with a short simple motive played by the trumpets and then in diminution by the flutes, oboe and alto saxophones. Permutations of this motif are heard throughout the piece. The overall form of the piece is ABA. The B section Adagio Maestoso represents the strong inner self-discipline and unselfish determination that individuals with “undaunted courage” exhibit. The A section returns with intensity and drive toward an inevitable dramatic finish. The piece begins in F minor with the slow B section in Bb Major. Although the returning A section begins in Eb Major, it quickly modulates to F Major.
